It is highly unrecommended not to update your company file which is stored on some other network computer. If the file is located on any other workstation, first move it to the local machine, update it and then copy back it to the other workstation.

Do not Interrupt the Update Pricess, Even if It is Taking Time

Make sure that when the file update is under process, no one on the network access it or interrupts the process. The update process may take some time to complete depending on the file size. And interrupting in the middle may result in permanently damaging the file.

How to Update Quickbooks Company File?

The step by step process to update the QuickBooks compnay file is as follows:

  • First, login to the server and open the QB application.

  • Then, opt for the Open or restore an existing company option.

If you are prompted by the Express Start Wizard (saying “Let’s set up your business!”), then simply close it to get to the No Company Open window.

  • Now, click Next after choosing to Open a company file.

  • Next, go to the point where  your company files are located. The location would be:

  1. C:\Users\Public\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files

  2. S:\Users\Public\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files

  3. For some users, it can be within a Shared drive or a "Clients" folder located as C:\ or S:\

  • Then, Click on the company file and Open it.

  • If you find multiple files with similar name, then you need to choose the file that has green/yellow icon Type named as QuickBooks Company File.

  • And, enter the company file's Administrator credentials and click OK.

  • It will promot you to update window. Here, click the Update Now button and the QB Company File Update Wizard will update your file. This window will automatically create a backup copy of your file prior to updating the file.

  • When finished, click Done.
